FUNCTIONS OF A TERMINAL
A terminal must allow the transfer and temporary storage of load units. To achieve this is required a structure with a large yard and adequate equipment. The main function is the transfer of cargo units from road to rail. This activity is done using reach stackers and rail mounted gantry cranes. Through the use of a spreader, the load units are hooked and transferred from one means of transport to another.
In essence, the activities of a port terminal can be summarized as follows:
- Storage of packages awaiting boarding
- Emptying of groupage loading units
- Handling of packages intended for oversized or extra weight once containerized
- Arrangement of compromised loads during the trip
- Emptying or filling of over-weight containers on the road (44 tons fully loaded in Italy, 40 in most of Europe, 39-37 in some countries of Eastern Europe)
- Customs visits and sampling for health analysis
- Transhipments that require "container grounding"
SERVICES OF A TERMINAL
Additional services are often offered at an intermodal terminal, such as warehousing, VGM (Verified Gross Mass) of the units and their contents, maintenance and repair of containers and storage of empty containers. Additional services, such as customs operations (for example inspections) or the repair of locomotives, are available at the largest and most well-equipped terminals.
PLACES OF THE TERMINALS
The terminals can be located inside interports or logistic platforms managed by private operators. The major Italian intermodal terminals are located in Melzo (MI), Segrate (MI), Busto Arsizio (VA), Piacenza (PC), Bologna (BO), Lugo (RA), Turin (TO), Orbassano (TO), Rivalta Scrivia (AL), Padua (PD), Verona (VE), Trieste (TS), Pomezia Terme (RM), Nola (NA) and Bari (BA). Different types of terminals can be identified, each with its own specificities. In Trieste in particular we recognize: container terminal, RO RO terminal, multipurpose terminal, oil terminal and bulk terminal.
THE TERMINALS IN CIVITAVECCHIA
In the territory of Civitavecchia there are several port terminals, which we are now going to list.
-Roma Terminal Container SpA
RTC Roma Terminal Container SpA was founded in 1994 as the first terminal operator active at the Port of Civitavecchia, which, due to its geographical location, structures and infrastructures, truly represents the "Gate of Heart of Italy", as it is strategically located in the center of Italy and the Mediterranean
-Rome Cruise Terminal (RCT)
The Roma Cruise Terminal was established in April 2005 and is owned - in an equal percentage - by Costa Cruises, Marinvest and Royal Caribbean. RCT owns the rights of use on docks 10, 11, 12 Bis South, 12 Bis North and 13 South of the port of Civitavecchia. Since 2011, the Roma Cruise Terminal has handled more than 2 million passengers a year. The Rome Cruise Terminal represents the gateway to Rome is preparing to keep up with the growth estimates. The close proximity of the terminal to one of the most important international airports - Fiumicino - also makes it an ideal place for turnaround operations.
-Civitavecchia Fruit & Forest Terminal (CFFT)
The terminal of CFFT SpA is ideally located inside the port of Civitavecchia, at quay 24 and 25. CFFT SpA is a 3PL company for the handling, storage and distribution throughout the whole of Italy and the Western Mediterranean region of food products, FFV (fresh fruit and vegetables) with in particular bananas and pineapples. As such, CFFT can meet all logistic and customs requirements of the market – including storage (chilled and frozen) of non-EU goods.
-Traiana SRL
Traiana Srl, founded in 1945, operates in its own terminal in the port of Civitavecchia. In the approximately 50,000 square meters available, loading, unloading, storage and handling of all types of goods (in packages, in bulk, project cargo, etc.) are carried out, as well as storage and containerization services. The terminal, equipped with a railway connection, has two covered warehouses for goods storage - for a total area of 4,500 square meters, thanks to its technical equipment and the experience and expertise of its employees, it is able to meet all needs.
